Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by word associations. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teens and joined National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford decided to apply instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she was already making her television debut in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
